Devil’s Glen (or the ‘Nick with Mick loop’)

Poetry, Sculpture, & Beauty…

• Above: Waterfall, Devil’s Glen

The frightening roar of the waterfall produced the name ‘Devil’s Glen’, as the river was mightier before the damming to produce the Vartry Reservoir.

•  Above: Devil’s Punchbowl, Devil’s Glen

This will be a forest loop in the Devil’s Glen much of which follows the course of the Vartry River. We will combine the Waterfall Walk and maybe the Seamus Heaney Walk. Heaney is said to have found inspiration in these woods.

There is also some wonderful woodland sculpture pieces en route.

Deerpark Trail – Maulin Trail linkup via the Wicklow Way

This guided walk links two trails and is generally moderate with a few strenuous bits and provides great views of neighbouring Maulin, Djouce, and the Deerpark Valley,

the Great Sugar Loaf, plus Powerscourt Waterfall where the Dargle river plunges 121m (or 398ft in ‘old money’), and is the highest waterfall on the island of Ireland.

Troop up Trooperstown Hill and round Round Hill

Post Christmas hike; day after St Stephen’s Day (27 Dec 2017). A hike for my REGULARS in the Laragh area followed by Carvery Lunch (~€12) in Lynhams of Laragh, which I’ve provisionally booked for 25 people.

We will hike Trooperstown Hill from the Laragh side + Round Hill (not too tough and fits the bill; see previous outing there http://www.meetup.com/MikesWicklowHikes/events/231039239/).

Djouce Odyssey (09-Oct)

This walk includes a section of the Wicklow Way near Lough Tay (a film location for ‘Vikings’ and ‘Excalibur’) heading towards White Hi2ll.  Panoramic views from the start on this one of the neighbouring hills, lakes, and reservoirs, and 360 gran vista atop Djouce (assuming no mist) onto its many spurs including Middle, Paddock, and Barrack Hill. We will head up to the Djouce summit (725m) and return back to our start point via new route or the Wicklow Way.
This route can get very windy and cold, so bring those extra layers.
